The Lighthouse Guild is a cutting-edge center that offers exceptional services to the visually impaired. They are located at 250 West 64th Street, New York, NY 10023 and provide healthcare services, social services, and activities. They are designed to meet the needs of people who are either legally blind or losing vision over time. We have not seen a center that is this progressive for the blind and visually impaired. We were fortunate to spend an afternoon at the center with their social work team and learn about their mission, values, and how that translates to their services. The Lighthouse Guild has elevated itself to be a Hidden Gem in the heart of Manhattan.
The loss of vision can happen for many reasons, and at times it is connected to other chronic illnesses such as diabetes and endocrinological issues, to name a few. The loss of vision can also affect someone’s mental health in many ways. Vision is often overlooked but is core to our existence and the way we navigate the world.
The Lighthouse Guild understands this at its core and works to be a haven in this space. They offer medical services including eye exams, eyewear, behavioral health, diabetes and endocrinology, podiatry, occupational therapy services, and day programs. They are a center that does not offer assisted living services, however, they provide substantial support to people living with family or on their own.
At times, we recognize that home is no longer the safest option, which could be relevant to people who are losing their vision. In cases like these, Oasis Senior Advisors will focus on assisted living communities that are designed to age in place—having resources like no trip hazards, wide door frames, easy-to-navigate buildings, and staffing levels that would support someone who needs more assistance over time. The goal of assisted living is to help someone be as independent as they can be while meeting their care needs.
If you know someone who would benefit from having a conversation about assisted living and how this can improve their quality of life, please give us a call. We can connect 1-on-1 to understand someone’s specific needs. Our work is not only about placement, but it’s also about connecting people to wonderful resources around New York City to help them live their best life. Please give us a call to start a conversation today at 917-830-7088.
